The effects of halothane and enflurane anesthesia on the bleeding time and platelet count

Abstract
Inhalation anesthetics may alter platelet function via an effect on adenylcyclase and increase blood loss during operation period.
To study the effects of halothane and enflurane on platelet function, 26 patients, undergoing elective surgical procedure with halothane in 14 and enflurane anesthesia in 12 patients, were studied as to bleeding time and platelet count and compared their results with control value.
The results were as follows:
1. Bleeding time was prolonged by 10.0%(p<0.05) in halothane anesthesia group, but it was no significant prolongation statistically in enflurane anesthesia group.
2. Platelet count revealed mild decrease in halothane and enflurane anesthesia group but its decreased effect was no statistical signification.
